Gakuran Ethnicity Guide — All 6 Ethnicities & Height System
Ethnicity is a character stat in Gakuran that is randomly assigned when your character is generated. It is not a cosmetic label — it directly determines the height range your character can spawn at, which in turn affects your combat stats. There are six ethnicities in the game, with Japanese being overwhelmingly the most common.
All 6 Ethnicities & Spawn Rates
Ethnicity is rolled automatically at character creation, the same way your fighting style is. You cannot choose it directly — you either accept the roll or spend Robux to reroll your entire character build until you get the one you want.
| Ethnicity | Approximate Spawn Rate | Height Tendency |
|---|---|---|
| Japanese | ~95% | Average |
| European | ~1% | Taller average |
| African | ~1% | Taller average |
| Middle Eastern | ~1% | Average to tall |
| Latin | ~1% | Average |
| Indian | ~1% | Average |
Note: Non-Japanese ethnicities combined make up roughly 5% of all character rolls. Individual rates are approximate — the developer has not published exact figures.
How Ethnicity Affects Your Height
Your height in Gakuran is not fully random. Each ethnicity has its own average height for both male and female characters, and the game generates your height around that average. This means:
- A Japanese character will almost always land near an average height
- A European or African character has a higher average, making tall rolls more likely
- You can still roll short as any ethnicity — it is just less likely if your ethnicity trends tall
The official Trello board publishes the exact height average for each ethnicity, separated by gender:
| Ethnicity | Male Average | Female Average |
|---|---|---|
| European | 178 cm (5'10") | 165 cm (5'5") |
| African | 175 cm (5'9") | 162 cm (5'4") |
| Middle Eastern | 173 cm (5'8") | 160 cm (5'3") |
| Japanese | 171 cm (5'7") | 159 cm (5'3") |
| Latinx | 170 cm (5'7") | 158 cm (5'2") |
| Indian | 167 cm (5'6") | 155 cm (5'1") |
These are averages, not fixed values — your actual height is randomly generated around your ethnicity and gender's average, so rolls close to that number are far more common than rolls far from it.

How Height Affects Combat Stats
Height is one of the most impactful character stats in Gakuran because it changes your combat performance across four dimensions:
Tall Characters
- More damage on melee hits
- More HP — survivability advantage in longer fights
- Larger hitbox — easier for opponents to land hits on you
- Slower movement, attack speed, and cooldowns
Short Characters
- Faster movement and attack speed
- Shorter cooldowns on moves
- Smaller hitbox — harder for opponents to hit you
- Less damage and lower HP
Average Height
- Balanced across all stats — no major strengths or weaknesses
- The HP difference between average and extremes is noticeable but not game-breaking at mid-range heights
Which Build Should You Target?
Since ethnicity indirectly influences height, it matters if you have a specific build in mind:
- Max damage / HP bruiser — target European or African ethnicity for a taller average, then reroll until you get a tall height roll
- Speed / evasion build — any ethnicity can roll short, but short + fast style (like Boxing) is a common pairing
- Balanced play — Japanese (the default 95%) is perfectly viable; the average height fits every fighting style without extreme drawbacks
Keep in mind that fighting style and combat skill have a larger impact on your win rate than height alone. Height optimisation is end-game min-maxing, not a beginner priority.
How to Reroll Ethnicity
Ethnicity cannot be rerolled independently — it is tied to your full character generation. To get a different ethnicity, you need to reroll your entire character build from the Stats menu — the same reroll used to change your hair, face, and last name — which costs Robux. There is no free reroll method for ethnicity.
Because rolling a non-Japanese ethnicity is roughly a 1-in-20 chance, and rolling the specific height you want within that ethnicity is an additional random step, chasing a rare ethnicity + tall height combo can be expensive. Most players simply accept the Japanese roll and focus on their fighting style instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does ethnicity affect fighting style rolls?
No. Fighting style is rolled separately from ethnicity. You can have any ethnicity with any fighting style.
Is ethnicity purely cosmetic?
Not entirely. Ethnicity affects your height range, and height directly changes combat stats (damage, HP, speed). It is indirect but real.
Can I see my character's ethnicity in-game?
Your ethnicity is shown in the Stats menu alongside your height, age, and fighting style.
