Gakuran Hair Color Guide: Chances & Colors by Ethnicity

Hair color in Gakuran isn't a flat random roll — it's tied to your character's ethnicity, with a small chance of breaking out into a dyed color entirely. Everything below is sourced directly from the official Trello board's "Hair Color" card.

How Hair Color Generation Works

Hair color is determined by your character's ethnicity. Each ethnicity has its own table of natural hair colors represented by RGB values, and when your character is generated, the game randomly selects a color from that ethnicity's own table.

  • Japanese characters draw primarily from a pool of natural black hair RGB values.
  • European characters draw from a wider natural range, including black, brown, blonde, auburn, and other naturally occurring shades.

The other four ethnicities (African, Indian, Latino, Middle Eastern) each have their own natural table too, though the developers haven't published the individual RGB breakdowns for those on the Trello board yet.

The 5% Dyed Color Roll

After a natural hair color is selected, there's a 5% chance the character instead receives a dyed color. If that roll hits, the game generates a random RGB color that does not exist within that ethnicity's natural table — the goal being a color that reads as artificially dyed rather than naturally occurring for that ethnicity.

Confirmed examples of dyed colors, per the Trello board:

  • Red
  • Purple
  • Green
  • Glacier Blue — added in the August 2026 v8.009 update, at roughly 0.0015%
  • White — the rarest specific shade called out, at roughly 0.0005%
  • Any other random RGB color that falls outside the ethnicity's natural set

Net result: 95% of characters get a natural color appropriate to their ethnicity, and 5% get a dyed color from outside their ethnicity's natural range.

Can You Get Any Color With Any Ethnicity?

Yes — the Trello board is explicit that anyone can roll any hair color regardless of ethnicity. What changes by ethnicity is the odds: colors inside your ethnicity's natural table come up far more often (via the 95% natural roll), while colors outside it only show up through the rarer 5% dye roll. So a Japanese character can end up with blonde hair, but it's riding on that 5% dyed chance rather than the much more common natural roll a European character gets for the same color.
